Google has warned developers they must address a number of extension security issues by year end or face store deletion

One lingering aspect of extension insecurity has been a lack of code transparency. That has changed with immediate effect, as the Chrome extensions product manager, James Wagner, has made clear. “Chrome Web Store will no longer allow extensions with obfuscated code” Wagner said in a Chromium Blog posting, continuing “this includes code within the extension package as well as any external code or resource fetched from the web.” The policy applies immediately to all new extension submissions, and developers of existing extensions with obfuscated code have until Jan 1st to make their code transparent. Failure to do so will result in those extensions being removed from the Chrome Web Store.
