It is generally accepted that DDoS started as a serious attack methodology in 1995, but how have things evolved since?
The Net Strike attacks against French government sites started it all in 1995. By 1997 the DDoS process had become somewhat automated thanks to the FloodNet tool developed by the Electronic Distubrance Theater (EDT) group. But it was the Low Orbit Ion Cannon (LOIC) used by Anonymous so successfully during 2010 that really put DDoS on the map. LOIC flooded target servers with TCP or UDP packets, but users just needed a point and click UI to launch the attacks.
