Until Elon Musk took control, albeit with a very chaotic definition of the word, at Twitter, few people had heard of Mastodon. This federated community network, launched in 2016, had enjoyed a relatively calm existence, mostly out of the media spotlight. That all changed over the course of the last few weeks as around a million new members flooded in looking for something to replace, or act as a social circle backup, to Twitter.
